Institute of Technical Education (ITE)

Around 17 years old and up • 3-year Higher Nitec (2 years with direct entry to Year 2), or a 2-year National ITE Certificate (Nitec)

Year by year

  1. ITE

    A three-year Higher Nitec, then a diploma

Most ITE courses now run as three-year Higher Nitec programmes: a broad first year, then specialised modules and internships in Years 2 and 3. ITE EAE lets students win a conditional place on aptitude before their results, with applications in May. From the AY2028 intake, students with G2 subjects, or a G3 and G2 mix, can enter Year 2 directly with an ELMAB3 of 19 or better.

Choices along the way

After the Higher Nitec

From the AY2027 polytechnic intake, Higher Nitec students with a raw GPA of 3.5 or more are guaranteed a place in a polytechnic course mapped to their own. The minimum to apply to a polytechnic rises to a net GPA of 2.5 from the same intake.

  • Poly EAE in the final year

Apply in June for a conditional offer before the final GPA is out.

  • A polytechnic diploma

Through the guarantee at GPA 3.5, or on GPA at 2.5 and above.

  • Work-Study Diploma or Technical Diploma

Apprenticeship-based diplomas that combine work and study.

What this opens or closes later

  • The guarantee is to a mapped course, not any course, so the Higher Nitec course shapes the diploma options.

Entry criteria

  • Entry is through JAE. Requires having sat at least 5 O-Level subjects over a maximum of 2 years, and meeting the specific course's minimum entry requirement (MER).

How admission works

  • MER is computed via one of several aggregate types depending on the course (ELB4-A, ELR1B3-B, or ELR2B2-C).
  • ITE operates a 'One ITE System, Three Colleges' model: College Central, College East, College West.
  • The JAE Online Appeal Portal is specifically for ITE Higher Nitec places entered at Year 2; JC/poly/MI appeals go directly to the school.

What to decide

  • Course and college choice against a hands-on, skills-based career pathway.
  • Progression into a polytechnic diploma after Higher Nitec, for students who want to continue academically.
