Polytechnic

Around 17 years old and up • 3-year diploma

Year by year

  1. Polytechnic

A three-year diploma, then university or work

Most students enter through the JAE after the SEC. Poly EAE gives Sec 4 students and final-year ITE students a conditional place on aptitude before their results, with applications in June and interviews from July to September. Diploma graduates can apply to the autonomous universities.

Choices along the way

After the diploma

Universities admit diploma holders on their diploma grades, and each degree lists the diplomas it accepts. NUS can grant up to 40 units of credit for relevant modules.

  • An autonomous university

Apply with final diploma results, or with results from the first five semesters while finishing the course.

  • Work

The diploma is built around an industry-relevant curriculum.

What this opens or closes later

  • Some degrees accept only certain diplomas, so check the university's list before choosing a course.

Entry criteria

  • Entry is through JAE, using a net aggregate score specific to each diploma course — commonly ELR2B2, capped at 26 for most general courses. Cut-offs are course- and year-specific: check MOE CourseFinder for the current admissions cycle before relying on a figure.

How admission works

  • Net aggregate = gross ELR2B2 aggregate minus CCA bonus points (2 points for an Excellent/A1-A2 CCA grade, 1 point for Good/B3-C6).
  • Same JAE-IS application process as JC: a Form A eligibility list, ranked course choices, posting and appeal.
  • The diploma is anchored around a 3-year, industry-relevant curriculum rather than the 2-year A-Level academic route.

What to decide

  • Diploma course and polytechnic choice against target career or university pathway.
  • Applied, industry-focused route vs the academic A-Level route (JC/MI).
