Secondary School (Sec 1-4/5)

Around 13 to 16/17 years old • 4 years (5 for some students taking O-Levels a year later)

Year by year

  1. Sec 1

Starting levels set by the Posting Group

Classes mix pupils from all three Posting Groups. Each subject starts at G1, G2 or G3, guided by the Posting Group and the PSLE grade in that subject. Pupils who qualify can also start Higher Mother Tongue or a third language.

  2. Sec 2

Subject levels reviewed; the Sec 3 combination is chosen

The school reviews subject levels at the end of Sec 1 and Sec 2, and a pupil who does well can move a subject up. At the end of Sec 2 families choose the Sec 3 subject combination, based on the Sec 2 results and interests.

  3. Sec 3

    Upper secondary begins

The chosen combination starts, and these are the subjects sat for the SEC in Sec 4. CCA records from Sec 1 to Sec 4 decide the CCA bonus points that count for JC and polytechnic admission.

    • School end-of-year exam · Oct
  4. Sec 4

SEC exams, DSA-JC and Poly EAE

DSA-JC and Poly EAE applications open in May and June, before the exams. Orals, listening and practicals come first, then English and Mother Tongue written papers in September and the other written papers from October. The JAE follows the results early the next year.

  5. Sec 5

    An optional fifth year

Eligible students can take a fifth year to take more subjects at G3 and open more post-secondary routes. The Polytechnic Foundation Programme is the alternative.

    • SEC written papers · Oct-Nov

Choices along the way

Subject levels: G1, G2 or G3

Under Full Subject-Based Banding every subject is taken at G1, G2 or G3 (mapped from the old N(T), N(A) and Express standards). A pupil in Posting Group 3 takes mostly G3, Posting Group 2 mostly G2, and so on, but the level can differ by subject.

What this opens or closes later

  • Levels are reviewed each year, so a strong subject can move up to a more demanding level.
  • The SEC in Sec 4 is sat at each subject's own level, on one certificate.
  • JC admission counts G3 subjects; polytechnic Year 1 admission from 2028 accepts one G2 subject among five.

Higher Mother Tongue Language

From 2026 a pupil can take Higher Mother Tongue from Sec 1 with AL1 or AL2 in Mother Tongue, or Distinction or Merit in Higher Mother Tongue, at the PSLE. The overall PSLE score no longer counts.

What this opens or closes later

  • A Higher Mother Tongue grade can earn bonus points for JC admission.

A third language

Pupils who qualify on PSLE results can take a third language from Sec 1. Malay and Chinese Special Programmes run at host schools; foreign languages, including French, German, Japanese and Spanish, are taught centrally at the two MOE Language Centres, so schools list them even though lessons are elsewhere.

What this opens or closes later

  • A third language is a four-year commitment sat at the SEC.
  • Only Malay or Chinese (Special Programme) or Bahasa Indonesia earns bonus points for JC and Millennia Institute admission; the foreign languages do not.

The Integrated Programme (IP), decided before Sec 1

IP schools run a six-year course straight to the A-Level, the International Baccalaureate Diploma or the NUS High School Diploma. IP pupils skip the Sec 4 exam and spend that time on a broader range of learning. The choice is made at S1 posting or through DSA-Sec, before Sec 1.

  • Integrated Programme

Six years to A-Level, IB or the NUS High Diploma, with no Sec 4 exam. MOE lists the IP schools.

  • SEC track

Sit the SEC in Sec 4, then choose JC, polytechnic, ITE or Millennia Institute.

What this opens or closes later

  • IP pupils are expected to stay the full six years; transfers to another IP school are not allowed except in exceptional circumstances.

Sec 3 combination: sciences, maths and humanities

At the end of Sec 2 the school offers each pupil a combination based on their results. The main choices are how much science, whether to add Additional Mathematics, and which elective humanities subject to take alongside Social Studies.

  • Pure sciences

Two or three of Physics, Chemistry and Biology as separate subjects. More content, and each counts as its own subject.

  • Combined science

Two sciences in one subject, such as Science (Physics, Chemistry). Keeps more room for other electives.

  • Additional Mathematics

Taken on top of Mathematics. Many JC and polytechnic courses in maths, science and engineering expect it.

  • Literature in English

One of the elective humanities (with Geography and History) paired with Social Studies, or taken as a full subject.

What this opens or closes later

  • JC admission needs a science or maths subject and a humanities subject among the relevant subjects.
  • Some polytechnic diplomas require a specific science or Additional Mathematics.

Sec 3 combination: other electives

Beyond the core, schools offer electives that differ from school to school. Where a subject shows in the directory, the link finds schools that list it.

What this opens or closes later

  • A school can only offer the electives it teaches, which is a reason to compare schools at S1 posting.

After Sec 4: DSA-JC, Poly EAE or the JAE

Admission uses an aggregate of SEC grades minus bonus points. For JC it is L1R5 of 20 or better until the 2027 JAE, and L1R4 of 16 or better from the 2028 JAE. For polytechnic it is ELR2B2 of 26 or better until 2027, and 22 or better from the 2028 intake. Bonus points for CCA, language grades and school affiliation are capped at 4 (3 for JC from 2028).

  • DSA-JC

Apply in Sec 4, before the exams, on a talent in sports, CCAs or an academic area. An accepted place is binding, and the SEC results must still meet JC entry.

  • Poly EAE

Apply around June on aptitude and interest (portfolios, interviews). A conditional offer is binding and rules out the JAE.

  • JAE

Choose JC, Millennia Institute, polytechnic or ITE courses after results in January.

What this opens or closes later

  • Students sitting the SEC in 2027 or later (the 2028 JAE onward) fall under the new criteria: L1R4 of 16 for JC, and ELR2B2 of 22 for polytechnic with one G2 subject allowed.
  • CCA bonus points come from the whole Sec 1 to Sec 4 CCA record.

A fifth year or the Polytechnic Foundation Programme

A student who does not yet qualify for JC, Millennia Institute or polytechnic Year 1 may be eligible for a fifth year of secondary school: with three or more G3 passes, or with two or fewer G3 passes and a gross ELMAB3 of 21 or better, ELB3 of 14 or better, or MAB3 of 14 or better, computed at G2.

  • Sec 5

A year to take more subjects at G3 and open more post-secondary routes.

  • Polytechnic Foundation Programme

A one-year practice-oriented programme at a polytechnic, leading into its diploma. From 2028 it is open to G3 and mixed G2/G3 students too.

  • Higher Nitec at ITE

A two-year course entered with SEC grades, including G2.

What this opens or closes later

  • The Polytechnic Foundation Programme is an alternative to Sec 5, not an addition.

Entry criteria

  • Posting is by PSLE score and choice, not direct application — pupils rank school preferences after receiving PSLE results.
  • From the 2024 Secondary 1 cohort, MOE removed the Express / Normal (Academic) / Normal (Technical) stream labels for schools with academic streams, replacing them with Full Subject-Based Banding (Full SBB).

How admission works

  • PSLE score = sum of Achievement Levels (AL1 to AL8) across 4 subjects (English, Mother Tongue, Maths, Science), ranging from 4 (best) to 32 (worst).
  • Under Full SBB, the PSLE score determines a Posting Group (1, 2 or 3) rather than a stream; within a Posting Group, students can still take individual subjects at G1, G2 or G3 level based on strength in that specific subject.
  • Schools with specialised programmes — the Integrated Programme, Crest Secondary, Spectra Secondary — sit outside Full SBB.
  • The first Full SBB cohort sits the new Singapore-Cambridge Secondary Education Certificate (SEC) exam in 2027, replacing O-/N-Level for that cohort; current Sec 3/4 students may still sit O-/N-Level during the transition.

What to decide

  • Ranking secondary school choices after PSLE results, weighing Posting Group fit against distance, CCAs and programmes.
  • Whether a school's specialised track (IP, Crest, Spectra) suits the child better than the mainstream Full SBB track.
